You're probably right. I had just been in the dressing room at p/t, though, talking to a woman about my age who looked 20 years older and was telling me how she had supported herself since she was 16 and at times had worked 3 jobs at once and worked her way through 3 nursing degrees and then had kids and raised them as a single mom and was now caring for her grandchildren even though she couldn't walk. I was mm-hmming sympathetically and thinking "this woman must never know the details of my life."
You never know. I know the feeling. But it is a rule of thumb that the oppressed are compassionate. How they survive. Same rule, field-tested, is that when you are hungry and thirsty in the middle of a state-sized reservation, it is the 2 women with 6 kids in a 20 year old car who pick you up. The loud and rude Trumpies are country in the sense that they have visited. Generally the higher income petite bourgeois and trades. Mind you, the nice ones do vote Trump. They do hate us. Just not you or me in person.
Joanna, you’re a Virgo. Virgos never do anything at the hobby level. We dive deep or not at all.
Loved reading this column. Made me feel we had a visit.
And I also feel the pressure of time gone by and we’re now at the short end of the stick.
I have a theory that doing everything by computer and app has. Add things harder for humans and easier for the computers, who really are going to rule the world, probably by the time our kids are our age. Maybe they already do. When my computer tells me I have to update programs, I better do it or it totally fucks me.
Hope to see you this summer! I’ll be in NY starting in May.
As for apps--my phone is constantly updating me into not knowing how to do anything. Desktop not so bad. Luckily you and I are of an age that knows how to to do it for ourselves if necessary.
“There’s so much effort spent engaging with a world where I don’t quite fit in and it’s exhausting to try.”
Many other fine cris de coeur. My favorite post so far. I only demur that rural whites would recognize you as one very old-school American.

She's been very nice to me! I saw her on Wednesday and she was walking with only a cane and had pink hair.
