I’d have been furious about walking downhill; I don’t like it when plans are changed. I would have worn different shoes! Carried a walking stick! Indeed, Words would have been Exchanged.😁

Your Catskills hiking experience is very similar to one I had in Portugal. We took a day trip to Sintra to see the castle and my husband decided we would hike down an overgrown trail that was actually gated off and had signs posted “TRAIL CLOSED”. I was wearing Dr. Scholl’s slip ons, jeans and had on several layers (t shirt, sweater tied around my waist, carrying a windbreaker). The trail was muddy and literally deconstructed in places (hence the signs DO NOT GET ME STARTED on why he insisted on hiking down a closed trail) and I kept falling. Also, do not underestimate the challenge of hiking down hill. I will get 25 minutes ahead of people whenever I hike “up” but the moment we have to go down it destroys my knees and ankles. And I am over 15 years younger than you and an accomplished athlete. So, do NOT beat yourself up over that.
